Re: How to install macOS on ESXi

In order to install Mac OS on esxi, you must have official Apple hardware. It is against Apple's EULA to install their OS on any other platform.

That helped me alot, so we found the problem.

The management network had two interfaces. We removed one cable and it worked fine.

After setting up the ESXi machine, plug in the cable and everything is working fine.

Thank you very much for helping. I installed the update for the client:

VIBs Installed: VMware_bootbank_esx-ui_1.24.0-7119706

VIBs Removed: VMware_bootbank_esx-ui_1.21.0-5724747

and I also tired the remote console:

But again with all Browsers and the remote Console I get this gray screen.

Seems to be a bug.

Kind regards

Helmut

The reason to enter a host into maintenance mode is just a text box which is optional to fill up. It's like when you restart windows OS and can type a comment why you do this.

Generally speaking host could be placed into maintenance mode because of some HW issues or other problems.

Re: VMs intermittent loses network connectivity.

We are having very similar issues in our environment now but only after upgrading to 6.5 from 6.0.  We've upgraded our emulex drivers to 11.2.1269 and network drivers to 11.2.1149 but continue to have issues with VMs dropping communication with VMs outside of the host on the same port-group (can communicate with VMs on the same port-group on the same host).  Our VC firmware version is on 4.45 but it seems from the dialogue that the VC isnt the problem.  Additionally, these VMs cannot talk to any other port-group on the same or different host either.  It's not until we vmotion the VM or disable / enable the VM NIC that the RARP brings the VM online again - with the upstream switches / gateway that is.  We may have a VM or VMs go down all within a short time, or we may go a couple of days without an issue - we dont see any pattern to what is triggering this event.

Environment:

C7000

BL460C Gen9 blades

FlexFabric 20Gb 2-port 650FLB Adapter 11.2.1269 / 11.2.1149

Virtual Connect firmware 4.45

esxi 6.5 w/ distributed switches

We have done a lot to try and stabilize the situation, including:

Initially upgraded our emulex drivers from 10.5 to 11.2.1269

Recreated the port-groups for the original migrated DVS

Recreated the DVS from scratch along with all of the port-groups.

Rebooted the upstream switches

Changed the port-group load balancing method to 'route based on originating virtual port' from 'NIC load'

Created static MAC address entries on 2 VMs to test communication between each other (failed)

Created interface IP(s) on the upstream switch(es) on the failed VM subnet to test connectivity to the VM (failed)

Removed MAC address entry in the address table on the upstream switch

Upstream switches do not show any issues with flapping during a failure event

VMWare logs/Log InSight/vROPS/ have no visibility into the issue as no events are logged during these failures

We had VMs fail on both sides of the chassis/VC

Any update to your own situation would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Unexpeted, repeated shutdowns of EXSi server

From about two weeks my Esxi server on HP Proliant DL 380 G5 shutdown unexpetedly  every two days.

After that I must manually restart it.

If I see on the vSphere dashboard the only alert message is this:

esxi.png

Any idea on how to fix it?

Thanks in advance

That usually means the cache battery on the storage controller is dead and you must replace it. As to whether that is responsible for the ESXi host shutdowns, don't know, but if you are using those internal drives in a RAID configuration and especially using write-back caching, you should plan to replace it ASAP.

Enabling Intel Direct IO/VT-d makes ESXi 6.5 not detect my 2TB sata hard drive?

To be Precise I have made a home-lab PC, which ESXi 6.5 is installed as its main OS. it contains 2 sata hard drives one which is 110GB and the other which is 2TB. Other than that I also have installed an nVidia quadro 4000 GPU which you might know that I need passthrough for to be able to use it in my VMs.

FYI: before this problem I had installed 5 VMs in my 2TB hard drive

Now The problems is that when I enable intel VT-d from my asus p9x79 Bios Utility for to be able to passthrough my nVidia GPU to my VMs, It basically makes ESXi not detect my 2TB hard drives. Although If I try esxcli storage core path list

I can see both 110GB hard drive and my 2TB hard drive, But the second one I mean 2TB is just not being shown in add storage tab which trying to create no datastore, But then When I disable my VT-d back my hard drive is visible again.

All replies are much appreciated

For the unexpected shutdown, login to the server's iLO, and  check the System Management Logs.

Checks if there are any events in the iLO log, as the controller cache may be experiencing problems. It can be hardware with problems or lack of firmware application.

I think You misunderstood My Question. I do know how to enable VT-d, But the problem is that when I enable VT-d It removes my 2TB hard disk which then ESXi does not show me my secondary hard drive

Ok I did figured out how to enable passthrough the GPU, by enabling VT-d. But Then enabling VT-d disables my hard drive

If you join ESXi to AD, you *use* a domain user to access it.

Missing file. Virtual Disk.vmdk

I seem to have accidentally deleted this file. Now when I try to get into Windows I get the message that  Virtual Disk.vmdk is missing. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling VMware but still get the same message. I have no idea of how to fix this. Any suggestions?

If the guy didn't leave a comment when entering maintenance mode, the only reason you'll know his motivations is to pick up the phone and ask him
