Re: Please help me unconfuse. ESXI 6.x

The vCenter Server Appliance is deployed as a separate virtual machine, and - in case you go with the 6.5 Update 1 version - provides an option to migrate your existing vCenter Server 6.0, i.e. take over the settings (assuming that it is a dedicate Windows Server for vCenter, i.e. no other services running on it). The vCSA can be downloaded from the VMware download section, likely the same location from where you downloaded the Windows installer.

The installation image you downloaded can be used to install, or upgrade vCenter Server. Whether you can install it on an existing server depends on what's already running on this server, and whether it meets the prerequisites (see Installation Guide). I'd suggest that in case you want to use the Windows version, that you use a dedicated Windows Server for it.

OK Now I understand thank you I tried to download the virtual server appliance but I was told I am not licenced for it.

So I think I will use an existing server and only extract the updater from it. the windows package.

Hello wsanders11,

Yes, it is installed and run on a Windows machine and uses the Linux box as target and the VMFS datastore as target - please note the handy diagrams on page 11-12 of that document that illustrate how this works (also note the 69 times that 'Linux' is mentioned!):

"I do not end up with a large flat file and a small vmdk config file. I end up with a small vmdk config file that contains a reference to a VMFS file:"

That's because you are not cloning it to a -flat but a vSAN DOM_OBJECT , vSAN doesn't use -flats, .vmdk descriptors point to DOM_OBJECTs such as the Object here with UUID e911b759-a4fe-21cd-6d0a-0cc47ad3960a .

If you are not writing it to a vSAN datastore then something must be going awry with vmkfstools -i destination clone format (-w switch IIRC).

... but I was told I am not licenced for it.

That's strange, because the Appliance uses the same license as the Windows based version!? So you should be able to download it from using same account, which you used to download the other edition.

Hi again

if  vim.fault.ResourceInUse so it has to be in use:)

check on all esxi hosts scratch location (ScratchConfig.ConfiguredScratchLocation) and syslog configuration (Syslog.Local.DatastorePath).

Does the same issue appear when using username@domain format? Also, could you provide the hostd logs after there is a login failure?

False hardware alarms

I have a pair of Cisco UCS C240s for hosts at work, and one of them keeps triggering alarms in vCenter 5.5 Essentials Plus.  Most of the time, it says that a fan is not functioning, and yet when I go into the hardware status, it doesn't even have fans listed.  In the hardware status, it says that there are 2 warnings for the processor, one for processor 1 showing "P_CATERR_N" and the second for processor 2 showing "P2_MEM01_MEMHOT".  When I go into the management page for the UCS unit, there are no hardware alarms at all, and the "predictive catastrophic error" flag is not triggered at all, and the memory all shows perfectly normal temps.  I trust Cisco's own page more than I trust vCenter's.  How do I turn off the hardware status alarms in vCenter to make this garbage stop?

Scratch is set to '/tmp/scratch' on both hosts, and the global syslog was already moved to another datastore.

This is what's on the DS now. The eui folder can be deleted and it comes back when the datastore is re-mounted.

VMWareDS.JPG

Unless there are hidden files that the browser isn't showing, there is that one directory containing one 0.38KB 'slotsfile'. That's it.

Like I said, usually, when there's something actually in use, it'll either warn you that there's something using it still before taking it offline, or flat out refuse to take it offline.

I did have a vSphere replication job replicating to that DS, but all replication jobs have been cleared out, so 'Total Replications' are now zero in vCenter.

I'm at a loss here.

there are multiple ways to upgrade the ESXi VIBs. please refer the below KB article

https://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=2109711#esxcli

If you are not sure about all of this process then follow the below steps

Option 1:

  1. manually download the Custom ESXi zip file from HP website
  2. upload the file to datastore
  3. place the host into maintenance mode
  4. ssh to the host and run the command

          esxcli software vib install -d “/vmfs/volumes/Datastore/DirectoryName/PatchName.zip

Option 2: interactive installation

Have you checked keyboard layout ? As you said when choosing Window's Session cred its working fine it means identity source working fine. For testing you should put password at the USERNAME filed and check if it is being type correctly and system isn't picking different characters as per keyboard layout.

Hi,

your host11 and the complete Cluster ist oom.

127+x GB ist the actual overcommitment on this host, this means your Guest slowes down cause they user there swap mechanisms...(writing on Disk)

In total your Cluster is missing minimum 19 GB ram.

If one Host crash next time your complete Cluster slowes down.

Before the we could used domain\username

Rename *.vmdk

Hello,
i'm using vSphere ESXi 6.0 and i try to rename my *.vmdk.

1. In the Webclient i rename the *.vmdk
2. Then i remove my Hd and then i add the existing HD with the new Name.

This works fine.
But when i do a storage vMotion the original *.vmdk file comes back.

Reason to rename the file:
To set a file filter exclution for Simpana backup.

Thanks and Regards
Dennis

When you do the storage vMotion all the related vmdk will be renamed with the vmname0.vmdk,vmname1.vmdk etc. that is the default behavior of storage vmotion.

Re: Invisible NFS mount problem

Hi!

we had nearly the same problem. After I found out which Datastore on our Netapp was deleted (I had to make a networktrace to figure this out), it was possible to remove the Datastore with the command "esxcli storage nfs remove -v DATASTORENAME". There was no need to create the old mountpoint. After that, the error message was gone.

Best regards

Problems with hardware interrupts and VM freezing

I have a Windows Server 2003 VM running on ESXi6.5.0.

I have a Comtrol RocketPort Express PCIe card installed on the host machine and have configured this for 'passthrough' to my VM. This card provides 32 physical serial communication ports. Within my VM I am using Calta Modbus simulator to run comms loop tests. I have he following connected up:

  Com3   ->   Com19

  Com4   ->   Com20

  Com5   ->   Com21

  Com6   ->   Com22

  Com10  ->  Com26

The Modbus communications are poor. Many messages are failing. See attached file (ESXi Comms Test Overnight.PNG).

In addition, I have noticed that if insert a USB memory stick into the host machine (I have this mapped to the VM) that the entire Windows process stalls for a few seconds. This is evident from the windows clock being frozen. Of course this only happens while I am running my loop tests. Without the Modbus comms running, inserting a USB stick is fine.

I have tried using Microsoft Process Explorer to determine what could be causing the problem and this seems to point to 'Interrupts', more specifically 'Hardware Interrupts and DPCs'. See attached 'Process Explorer - Interrups.PNG'.

It may be that this problem is a show stopper for our intended purpose. Would there be any reason for 'passthrough' to struggle in the above situation?
