Re: Vsphere 6.5 U1 update on Windows fails

Dear Jbp85

I was working on this issue the last few days and it drove me almost crazy. I had the same error in the wrapper.log but did not have the idea to just delete the files.

So your solution worked for my environment - I modified steps a bit: before starting Setup I stopped all vCenter Services, deleted the Folders and then started Setup.

Perfect! Thanks a lot for sharing your information.

BTW: I have Win2008R2 and adressed the issue while updating my (external) PSC from V6.5d to V6.5U1. I had the issue only in my production Environment... in my development Environment I updated first and has the same configuration like production strangly anything worked without a Problem.

Welcome to the Community,

ESXi - once installed - will run in evaluation mode for 60 days, so that you can test all available features. At any time during these 60 days (or even later) you may enter a valid license key, either one for a paid license, or one for the free Hypervisor, which you can register for at https://www.vmware.com/go/get-free-esxi

Re: Why bother with VMs-based SQL Cluster?

for the vast majority of workloads HA based resilience may in fact be good enough,   in fact as SQL Cluster failover is not instantaneous,  I too feel that it is an unnecessary complexity, when working in a virtual environment,  however if you have Enterprise plus licenses and a 10GB infrastructure (also the necessary extra 10GBe ports) you could gain instantaneous recovery and failover by using Fault Tolerance.  with Ent+ licensing you can do 4 CPU SMP on your SQL server.

I would like to add to Andre's answer to say that if you do not obtain a license for your ESXi Server your currently running machines will continue to work, but you will not be able to start any new ones or reboot those currently running

Further if you obtain the free hypervisor license there are some serious limitations such as not being able to add the host into a vCenter (that side a single host would not really need vCenter).

Passthrough CDRom vs Emulate CDRom in device Mode

Hi all. Just want to asking. May i know what is the different of Passthrough vs Emulate when we want to select device mode for new adding CD/DVD Drive in vm? Anyone can sharing an idea or info for this?

And let say, if my ESXi host mounted ISO and my server want to get the ISO from host, what should i choose between emulate and passthrough? Kindly appreciate any explanation on this.

Seems to be network configuration issue. Are all hosts on same network ? Gateway is reachable from all 3 hosts !

On affected hosts, run below command and paste output here.

esxcli network diag ping -I vmk0 -H 10.27.51.132

replace vmk0 with VMkernel port number you are using for management network on that host and IP with other two host's IPs.

Hi Camero

Thanks for the reply.  I did come across on the reverse lookup, but never set it up.  I have updated DNS server so forward lookup and reverse lookup return the same.

Nslookup vc651.domain.com returns 192.168.1.133, and nslookup 192.168.1.133 returns vc651.domain.com

Performed the installation again, same error....The same vAPI error and 1603 error...

I looked at the logs, can't decipher what went wrong...

Thanks,

-Ken

Tom, Thanks for reply. Can "4 CPU SMP" mean 4 sockets? Most SQL servers need multiple cores. We need 2 sockets with 8 cores each -- a total of 16 cores. Can that be done in FA configuration? Thanks.

What host does during destroying svmmirror?

I have a questiong for svmotion.

I move the vm to a new datastore, but it showed the error "Failed to resume destination VM". Then I check the vmkernel.log, some sentences caught my attention:

SVM: 2463: Error destroying device 81857f1-67856d3-svmmirror (Busy)

As we know, druing svmotion, Exsi will creat three svmmirror, and destory them. Why failed destory svmmirror ? What does means "Failure (0xbad0001) @0x41800bac81d6", how to get these error No. meaning. What host does when it destory the svmmirror?

error: enumInstances No data received from server

Hi,

I'm getting the following error when running the below command:

[root@esxi:~] /usr/lib/vmware/vm-support/bin/swfw.sh

Software and Firmware versioning info from CIM Providers.

error: enumInstances No data received from server

[root@esxi:~] vmware -vl

VMware ESXi 6.5.0 build-5310538

VMware ESXi 6.5.0 GA

I was using the command to see the firmware versions of the server components. It was working fine, then I have updated the HP Smart Array P440ar firmware, rebooted the host (twice), and the same command which was working before is now giving me this error.

The local datastore is accessible, so I believe the firmware upgrade went well, but I'm not sure if it is related to this problem or not.

Googling for the error message did not return any relevant results.

Any hints what might be wrong?

Thanks a lot!

Re: Passthrough CDRom vs Emulate CDRom in device Mode

I haven't something to test but this is what I found online :

Passthrough IDE (raw). Use mode only for remote client device access.

You can write or burn a remote CD only through pass-through mode access.

Passthrough mode is not functional for local host CD-ROM access.

Emulate IDE. Use to access a host CD-ROM device.

The host CD-ROM device is accessed through emulation mode.

In emulation mode you can only read a CD-ROM from a host CD-ROM device.

If you have a CD device on your ESXi host you can use Emulate IDE mode to read it.

This gives you a functionality of just read.

If you have an ISO on a CD Drive on a Desktop from which you are accessing VM using the vSphere client, you will have to use Pass through mode. This gives you the functionality of both read and write(burn).

Read This blog post for better understanding.

OVF generated for Vcenter 6.5 has backward compatibility issues with 6.0

$

OVF generated with older versions of ovftool(less than 4.2 ) uses SHA1 for manifest file which works fine on Vcenter 6.0 but not on vcenter 6.5. Same with OVF generated with 4.2 version of ovftool uses SHA256(can be changed)  for manifest file which works fine on Vcenter 6.5 and not on 6.0 .

To summarise SHA1 works on 6.0 but not on 6.5 and SHA256 works on 6.5 but not on 6.0 .

Is there a way to generate common  OVF which works on both 6.0 and 6.5  ?

Kinldy check If the virtual machine is liste don vCenter server or View ADAM database, if the desktop is not present then its stale entry which is safe to delete, Please follow the KB 1008658 or 2118050

Couple of things: 1. Do you have management enabled on other vmkernel interfaces? 2. Do all hosts use the same vmkernel interface for management traffic? 3. Can all hosts ping the default gateway from the management vmkernel interface?

Windows Server Template

Hi, is it possible to create an image/ISO file, the content of this image file is a WIndows Server OS 2012 R2, update this with the recent updates and save this as a template for future installations BUT I would like this to be a sysprep'd image so that by the time I import this image, it has a new SID for the server. Is this possible?

Thanks

Jeff

RDM mapped to Windows 2008 Server guest "file or directory is corrupted and unreadable"

$

I wanted to move an NTFS-formatted 4TB SATA drive from a Lubuntu machine to my Windows Server 2008 VM (running on an ESXI 6.5 host - Dell Optiplex 3010). I installed the drive in the server, then mapped it as as RDM. The Windows VM can see the drive, but can't read the content (it was about 80% full of files) - I get "the file or directory is corrupted and unreadable". Any ideas??

USB device unavailable after shutdown

So, we had a VM that was using an external USB drive for a legacy system (don't ask, I didn't set it up). After I put the host in Maintenance mode, and shut it down to add memory, the USB drive is no longer available for VMs to use.

It's there in lsiusb, but not available when trying to connect it to the VM.

usbarbitrator is running

What HW do you use? Do you see any HW errors in iLO, iBMC or whatever depends on your server HW?

Seems to be a HW \ BIOS firmware  issue.
