Re: Vsphere 6.5 U1 update on Windows fails

I found the problem.

In fact the vcsservicesmanager.msi finish to start all VMware services. The "VMware Platfom Service Controller Client" service start and stop.

In the wrapper.log of VMware-psc-client (C:\ProgramData\VMware\vCenterServer\runtime\vmware-psc-client\logs\wrapper.log), I noticed there was a wrapper license problem.

During the upgrade the java wrapper of vmware-psc-client is updated but the wrapper.conf is not replaced. The new wrapper version need a license which is not in the old wrapper.conf file.

During the upgrade (after the services stopped) I removed the bin and conf folder in : C:\ProgramData\VMware\vCenterServer\runtime\vmware-psc-client.

The upgrade finished well !

It took me 3 days !!!

Datastore size 1.36TB >  45.21GB free and threshold to 15%.

Folders lost after shutdown

In ESXi 6.0, I had created some folders and some additional scripts.

However, after turning off and on the hypervisor physical server, all these files and folders are gone.

Is this correct? When restarted, are these folders and files deleted?

That's the expected behavior. If you need to store files, create a folder on a VMFS datastore.

With an threshold of 15%, an alarm should already be displayed if the free disk space goes below ~200GB.

ok i'll change the %.

Also setting up alerts in vCenter 6.5 web client is there pacific alerts we should receive/enable and send a notification trap OR email notification?

With only ~42 GB free it might also be a good idea to consider increasing the storage space, or migrating some VMs to other datastores.

Veeam - like other backup applications - creates snapshots for its backups, and in case one of them cannot be deleted, you may be in trouble if the datastore runs out of disk space!

You should at least enable notification for the Datsatore usage alarm.

I have the same issue with ESX 6.5 and the latest Freenas version.

It is unbelievable that VMware is not able to fix these kind of bugs really. I just decomission the previous NAS. Now I have to set it up again all over just to unmount the datastore from vc??? What a shitty product.

you try pinging the VMkernel (using vmkping) from the esxi hosts

I'm sorry. The error code is very generic.

Can you check if the services start well (via Event viewer) when the vcsservicemanager.msi is proceed ? And if one start and stop ?

Re: How to assign 6.5 web console to use a /32 address?

After paying $300 for an incident support request I was told that unless console access is available, outside the web configurator or SSH, assigning the /32 address to the management console is not possible.

I have this same issue. The setting to "Disable Display Scaling on high DPI settings" did not work entirely for my laptop (4K display). With this setting, the console becomes usable, but the VM machines in the left hand pane are enlarged and overlap each other making it very difficult to see or click on one. Does anyone know how to fix this issue with the left hand pane (with VM machines) with the "Disable Display Scaling on high DPI settings" checked? Or another way to fix the console only showing part of the VM?

how can i migrate VMs from one datastore to another datastore on same single host?

Why bother with VMs-based SQL Cluster?

Since VMware allows use of RDM disks to setup a Windows cluster using VMs, which can be used to install SQL cluster, we decide to go this route.

However, now after installing the Windows cluster, I am finding out that you cannot do snapshot of these VMs due to shared disks (physical RDM, as recommended). This also means you cannot do Veeam or other backups.

We, of course, can do OS and SQL server backups, but restore from them will be quite time-consuming in a disaster. SAN level backup will require purchase of separate expensive software for just 2 VMs.

To me this is a very serious limitation of using VMs to create a Windows/SQL cluster. If I go with a single VM SQL server, I will still avoid single-point hardware failure due to VMware HA. Only disadvantage will be some down-time when server needs to reboot, for Windows updates, etc. This is a very minor inconvenience, compared to not having any VM-level backups. (There is hardly any difference in performance of RDM vs VMFS.)

Am I missing something? Is my conclusion wrong? Please share your experience and/or viewpoints. Thanks.

what would you suggest to have backup/DR for single host running 6 VMs.

Not sure what you are asking for. In your initial post, you mentioned that you have Veeam backup in place.

You are currently using ESXi in evaluation mode. This license will expire in ... days.

Hi there! I´ve installed ESXi and trying it virtualizing 3 servers. So it displays the subject message. How do I actívate it? suposing that this software is for free. in fact tomorrow is the last day and I don´t want to loose all virtualized job.

Thanks a lot for your help.

Betst regards,

Alejandro

Hola!

Saludos,

Alejandro
