Re: Vmware Esxi Update No Space Left On Device Error

@FirstS0ul

Thanks for your solution.  We tried this but encountered memory errors. The solution was to enter the host webui and Go to Host > System > Swap and activate swap on our datastore vmfs. Once the setting was enabled the esxcli software profile update command worked normally.

Thanks for posting very helpful.

Failed to get copy progress while consolidating disks

hi all

i could find an exact match with google on "Failed to get copy progress while consolidating disks from"

so maybe somebody has some clue here

i'm not able to consolidate one VM (others on the same host are fine)

i created a snapshot, then deleted all snapshots already, there are no snapshots in the snapshot manager

the exact error i get is:

Failed to get copy progress while consolidating disks from '/vmfs/volumes/56d041a0-3b56e40b-0f80-1418774c8cf2/template/template-000064.vmdk' to '/vmfs/volumes/56d041a0-3b56e40b-0f80-1418774c8cf2/template/template.vmdk'.

i already put the variable snapshot.maxConsolidateTime to 30 as i found elsewhere in this forum, no luck

wether i do it with the VM on or off, makes no difference

i also tried to clone the VM through vCenter, but that fails too

any clue is appreciated

No feedback? Still, haven't found any information according NVMe controller + mechanical disks..

How many snapshots does the VM have in the current chain?

In case there are too many, one might need to consolidate them in multiple steps.

Update:

Everything has been running really well. I had some crashes that seem to be associated with Memory. If you are doing a Ryzen server make sure you have the latest bios and supported memory. I find that some memory and some speeds will make your system very unstable. Check your motherboards recommend/supported memory before you buy. You will save yourself a lot of time and headache. G.Skill and Corsair have a high compatibility with Ryzen but always check your motherboard specs for recommended model numbers.

Thanks,

Eric

With 64 snapshots it should be possible to manually clone the first 32 snapshots to a new virtual disk. Then re-chain the remaining snapshots with this new .vmdk, and delete the remaining snapshots from the Snapshot Manager. This should even be possible without much downtime. Some downtime however is required to re-chain the snashots.

First, and most imporatnt question: Do you have a backup in case something doesn't work as expected?

Second question. What's the virtual disk's provisioned size, and how much free disk space do you currently have on the datastore?

Last but not least, please attach the VM's latest vmware.log file as well as its configuration (.vmx) file to a reply post. These files should help to determine the required steps.

well, i have Veeam backup running with 10 restore points, but i found this problem later, so in short, no backup

i have 2 datastores

datastore1  is SSD (1Tb) this is where this VM resides, provisioned storage 425Gb, 290Gb Free (the VM disksize is 200Gb)

datastore2  is SATA 22Tb there is some 5Tb free

attached are the vmx and the log

thanks for the help

can i just cp -rp the entire VM directory in linux to the bigger datastore as backup ?

Yes - but thats a bad idea.
Your best option is to clone the last but-one snapshot to a different datastore via
vmkfstools -i last-but-one.vmdk /vmfs/volumes/other-datastore/dir/name.vmdk
That can be done while the VM is running.
When the clone is done you only need a short power down to attach the last snapshot to the newly created basedisk.
When that is done power on the VM and consolidate while its running.
Sorry - the details you provide dont contain enough info to be more specific.
The log is truncated and there is no filelisting.

Don't use the Linux cp command on VMFS datastores, this may cause serious performance issue for any other VMs running on it!

Just a quick question. I saw that this is a Linux VM. Are you familiar with Linux? In this case it might be an option to add another virtual disk to the VM (also 200GB), boot to a Linux Live CD, and use Linux commands (s.th. like dd if=/dev/sdX of=/dev/sdY bs=64K conv=noerror, sync status=progress) to clone the entire disk from within the guest itself.

This way the original virtual disk won't get touched, and you can safely delete it after ensuring that the clone works as expected.

If you rather want to go with doing it from the Hypervisor level, then please re-attach a complete vmware.log file. The currently attached one is incomplete.

hi Andre

that's a good idea, didn't think of that

i'll see if i can clone the disk from linux itself

Hi Richardson,

Thank you very much for the reply.

My ESXi hosts are all on version 5.5.

I was also unable to increase the capacity on the ESXi host directly, with the same greyed out button.

I would really appreciate any advice.

Thanks,

Sang.

Vsphere 6.5 networking

First let me start by saying I'm fairly novice at ESXi.  The last time i used it was 3.5.  I have tried reading all the material on vmware networking, but somehow it doesnt click with what im seeing on the console.

I've gotten as far as installing the host and creating a win7 VM.  the problem i am having is getting this VM onto the network and pulling an IP address.  i have two physical NICs on the server.

Under Networking i have two port groups (VM Network/Management), on vSwitch (vSwitch0), and one VMKernal NIC (vmk0) and one default TCP/IP stack.

Both port groups are connected to vSwitch0, which i have two up-links (that go to the same swtich and VLAN).

My mangement network is where i reach my web gui for the ESXi host.  My VM Network is where my WIN7 VM resides.

what, at a minimum, do i need to get this WIN7 VM to pull an IP and have network connectivity?

Do i need to install a vCenter Server to configure this?  If so, my plan was to install a server 2008 VM (on said host) and install it there, but i would think i need it to be able to connect to the network first.  or am i just confusing he heck out of this?

Thanks in advance

Use EXT3 drive in Windows 2008 Server guest?

I have an EXT3 4TB drive which I have salvaged from a Linux machine. I want to use the drive as a read/write file storage device for a Windows 2008 Server R2 guest O/S. The host is ESXi 6.5 on a Dell Optiplex. Will I need to reformat the drive to NTFS or FAT32 from within the guest O/S before I can use it, or is there any way that I can retain the existing EXT3 format and content and use it in the Windows guest without reformatting it?

That mean the version 6.0 need the Zero Thick and version 6.5 support the Thin??? Why?

Welcome to the Community,

all you actually need is a DHCP server somewhere on your network.

Also make sure that the physical switch ports don't have port-Security enabled. This might limit the number of MAC addresses which can sign in on the ports.

I should also have clarified that the 4TB drive is a SATA drive...
