Re: Cannot add network adapter to ESXi 6.5 VM?

$

I have the same problem, I cannot add a network adapter to a VM without the interface crashing and asking to reload.

This is the SECOND install of VMWare ESxi 6.5 in the last week.

  6.5.0       5310538

I was unable to resolve the issue on the first host, so I decided to add another host instead of trying to fix VMware's problem.

I have used multiple browsers, Firefox, IE, even Opera, no change, they all crash.

This is for a development system so it is critical this works.

I have submitted a bug report for the crash, but I am still searching for a way to get past this.

Here is the error:

so its safe to delete? if yes what's the best way to delete it?

Again, yes you safely can delete this file from the datastore.

Out of curiosity: What's the reason for the low disk space? Thin provisioned virtual disks, snapshots, ...?

VMware documentation for scenarios like yours is very poor.
With 2 hosts and no shared storage every investment in more vCenter features is wasted.
Using a cluster with no shared storage makes zero sense.
Your problem  are not  eventual cosmetical performance issues but the high risk of data loss.
With local storage you are forced to use VMFS for your datastores.
One power failure and your data may be lost.
What you need is more physical RAM and a few thousand bucks for a decent machine that can act as a Linux NFS-server.
VMware official best practice is written for guys that have the pockets to think as big as VMware suggests.
vSphere is only enterprise ready if you have the money and hardware to run shared storage and at least have a daily backup solution in place.
If you are not willing to invest enough money to buy that minimum you better do NOT read best practice documentation as it gives you bad ideas.
My suggestions for small environments like yours:
- only use eager zeroed thick vmdks
- write down the mapping for each vmdk after you created it
- allways wipe new datastores with zeroes before you partition to VMFS
- NEVER fill up datastores to more than 90%
- allways rebuild datastores from scratch after you filled them up
- use UPS power supply

- avoid ESXi 6 or later if possible
- do not use automatic backup tools like Veeam if you are not willing to also run daily monitoring tools and if you are not willing to check your backups daily
- invest the first available money in a powerful NFS-server that uses a non cutting-edge filesystem
- make sure that all your admins know how to work with WinSCP and Putty
- do not upgrade VMFS-versions on the fly
- DO NOT USE LOCAL STORAGE WITH RAID 5

All this suggestions are based on real live experiences of my recovery customers and often contradict suggestions you would read in best practice tips.

Does Digi's AnywhereUSB work well with ESXi 6.0?

We're about to P2V a few servers that currently require license dongles for its software. I was wondering if anybody has had any issues working with AnwhereUSB by Digi.

After upgrading Veeam 9 to 9.5. There isn't any open SSs. Yes thin provisioning  lazy zero.

Hi,

I need to setup ESXi 6.5u1 host on HP proliant DL360. HPE has following options.

1. HPE customize ESXi image.

2. HPE ESXi Offline Bundels.

3. Build your own custom ESXi image.

Thank you

I've been using the HP OEM image for quite some time now, and it works as expected.

Assuming that you have a Gen8, or Gen9 host, also make sure that you update the firmware to the latest (SPP 2017.04), which includes iLO 2.50.

yes its gen9 during initial setup it downloaded updates from HP site.

Still need to run SPP 2017.04?

Not sure what was updated during the deployment.

I assume that you used HPE's "Intelligent Provisioning"!? I used this once to see how it works, and - to be honest - never used it since. To me it seems to be too much overhead to install ESXi. That's why I usually let the SPP update the firmware, before I install/update ESXi,.

Anyway, the critical part is the iLO firmware, which should be at least v2.50.

yes iLO version is 250 i just confirmed.

what else you recommanded settting esxi 6.5u1?

I found that the installation of KB4025339's delta update had failed on my Server 2016 system. Installing the full update from the Microsoft Catalog allowed me to get past this error.

Failed to configure redundant uplink network interface for vSwitch ( HPE Custom Image for VMware ESXi version 6.5.0 U1 )

Hi,

I have a HP DL380 G9 server. Last week I updated the OS, it turns out that only one uplink network interface can be appointed to a vSwitch.

The previous image is  HPE Custom Image for VMware ESXi  version 6.5 (release date 2017-07-11), and the updated one is HPE Custom Image for VMware ESXi version 6.5.0 U1(release date 2017-07-27). The previous image does work( I had each vSwitch configured with two uplink interfaces).

Any suggestions?

Thank U!

Hello,

Go into the Configuration tab, then Health Status

http://masteringvmware.com/how-to-view-esxi-host-hardware-status/

Aslo try this esxcfg-info commdn.

OPTIONS

-N N    Print info output for N iterations.

     -a –all

Print all information available through esxcfg-info.

     -w –hardware

             Print hardware information.

     -r –resource

             Print resource and schedule information.

     -s –storage

             Print storage and disk-related information.

     -n –network

Print console and VMkernel networking information.

     -y –system

Print ESX Server system software information.

     -o –advopt

             Print the advanced options.

You can retrieve this information by browsing to https://youresxhost/cgi-bin/esxcfg-info.cgi.

You can also use Hardware vendor management tool to get complete hardware healthj status like iDrack for Dell and HPSIM for HP.

Struggling with vCenter 6.5 U1 installation in a lab environment.  This is a fresh Windows install, just the Windows OS.  Fresh vCenter install (not an upgrade).  Installation persistently produces 2 errors.

Error 1

Error: An error occurred while starting service 'vapi-endpoint'. Failed to start the vAPI Endpoint Service. Failed to configure vAPI Endpoint Service at the firstboot time. Please file a bug against VAPI. (only option is to click OK)

Error 2

Installation of component vcsservicemanager failed with error code 1603

The server environment and steps tried
1.  Windows 2012 R2 Standard, .Net 3.5 and .Net 4.5 features are installed (Windows firewall disabled, no Antivirus)

2.  Ran Windows update and reboot until there is no more updates available

3.  Server is in workgroup setting, not joined to AD (the installation doc doesn't state AD is a requirement, aware of some features may not work)

4.  VM with 16GB ram, 4 processors at 2.5Ghz. 100GB SSD, 2 NICS (1 facing the Internet and 1 facing private network)

5.  Computer name and FQDN names are the same.  Server name is VC651, FQDN name is VC651.domain.com.  The FQDN resolves over DNS forward lookup
6.  Netsh shows 3 IPV4 adapters, loopback, Ethernet0 and Ethernet1

7.  Tried IPV6 checked and unchecked with installation, makes no difference

8.  SSO password does not contain restricted characters (no -, ?, _, (, =, !,,)

9.  Installation is embedded, everything on the same server, using all installation defaults (options and ports)

10.  UAC is disabled

11.  Launched the installer with Run-As-Administrator

12. Attempted installation with Local System Account, same errors
13. Attempted installation with an Admin account (with logon batch service right) with full administrator privilege, same errors

15. Windows installer is in manual start mode, but the service itself is in started state

16. Schtasks shows Windows Scheduler task is running

17. One of the VMWare resolution article states to modify "Software Restriction Policies" section in the group/machine policy and allow permissions for Java.  There is no software restriction policy defined on the server, not sure if this is applicable

I am sure someone out there has successful installations.  Your help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

-Ken

Go binaries - ESXI

$

Hello,

I've a Go binaries, and, i like to run it on VMWare ESXI.

I assume that ESXI is based on Centos but ils hightly modified and with a modified Kernel.

The Go binaries is Rclone and can permit to mount cloud storage on ESXI (for backuping VM).

When I run the Go binararie (rclone), I get this issue:

"Segmentation fault"

When I run an "Hello world" in Go binaries, I get issue:

"Segmentation fault".

My question is: is there a way to run 3rd party binaries on ESXI (especially Go binaries). If yes, how can Ido for running it on WMware ESXI?

Thanks.

Re: Vmotion Issues

Hi, I meet this issue today, we have 2 Core switches which are 3750 , all VM LAN card is E1000.

We have two ESXI server and connect to different core switch. vMotion of VM is fine. After we

change core switch to c3850x and do VM migrate from one ESXI to another one, the VM will be offline.

I found this is ARP issue. I have check the core switch mac address-table with the VM mac address.

The master core switch do not update the mac address table after the VM changed ESXI server. When

we try to connect to the VM, package will go to wrong port. We need to clear the mac address in core switch

manually then the VM will go back online.

But I find that if the VM LAN card change to use VMXNET2.0, there is no this issue. Anytime we migrate the

VM to another ESXI, both core switches will update their mac address table immediately. I think new Cisco IOS

does not support VM E1000 for vMotion anymore. Because there is no any issue when doing vMotion in my old

3750 IOS with VM E1000 lan card. But After change to use c3850x with new IOS, vMotion got network issue with

E1000 lan card, but good for VMXNET2.0. But one thing I really don't understand why Cisco don't support VMXNET3.0.

I had tried VMXNET3.0 and E1000 but fail network and only VMXNET2.0 is successful for vMotion.

Hope this information helpful.

HPE Custom image 6.5 U1, Can not add vnic to vSwitch

Hi

When i try in GUI to add extra vnic to vswitch "it says no free physical adapters".

But it works fine to add it with "esxcli network vswitch standard uplink add -u vmnic2 -v vSwitch1" command.

Anyone else have the same problem?

GUI Bug maybe ?
