> But the Datastore is empty and we cannot change any settings of the VMs as it throws an error
Just to be sure ... what happens if you use ssh and try to
cd /vmfs/volumes/datastore1
At the moment I would assume that all further attempts to do anything via GUI or commandline could make matters worse.
When can you schedule a reboot of the ESXi ?
I would also try to backup all running VMs - if that is possible.
Also create a VMFS header-dump. That will help to recover in case the VMFS datastore is too damaged to mount again after a reboot.

Same issue with LSI 9260-8i RAID Controller.

Wish Broadcom and/or VMWare would just give a straight answer so we know to wait or move to new hardware.

I contacted Broadcom support and the reply I got back is posted below. I tried the SMIS they provided, but it didn't seem to work for me. Let me know if you have any luck because I may not know what I am doing.

Yes we will come out with an SMIs provider or find the root cause.
6.5 was working fine and theoretically, the 6.5 SMIs provider should have worked.

But it is broken and no one seems to have a reliable fix at tthe moment.

But we are working on it.
We have had some success with this version:

ftp://tsupport:tsupport@ftp0.broadcom.com/private/LSA/vmware-smis.zip

You are more than welcome to try it.
If it does not work, just uninstall it and I will keep your case open until the final release comes out.

If to no avail, use storcli
Latest storcli for all OS:

We had a similar problem recently post-upgrade from v6.5 to v6.7 in that we lost access to about 1/2 of the datastores on our SAN.  This affected not only the host that we upgraded, but also the other 2 hosts in the cluster which were still running v6.5.  Due to path failover (lost Active paths failed over to Standby paths), we didn't discover the extent of the problem until it was too late.  Hosts ended up 24 hours later showing as Not Responding in vCenter, with the VMs still running but showing as Disconnected.

So if you're using Direct Attached Storage with your host, then maybe the fault is similar?  If you're a VSAN environment, then ignore what I'm about to say.  Either way, talk to VMware and get help quickly.

-------------------- what happened in our environment follows:

VMware advised that the cause was a storage fault, as evidenced by storage controller errors in the vSphere logs ("state: dead sas") and that we needed to raise a ticket with our storage vendor (Dell EMC).

Dell EMC investigated and identified a likely root cause as being a change in behaviour of a key storage driver (lsi_msgpt3) which changed between vSphere v6.5 and v6.7 and which required a configuration change in the parameters of the driver.

This configuration requirement is documented in knowledgebase articles both from Dell EMC (https://www.dell.com/support/article/US/en/19/sln313031/sc-storage-customer-notification-driver-compatibility-concerns-with-front-end-sas-connectivity) published 21/1/2019 and also VMware (https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/67032) published  9/2/2019).

Again, TALK TO VMWARE FIRST is my suggestion; don't just change stuff unless you're sure of the diagnosis!

We needed to run the following commands on each host via CLI:

esxcfg-scsidevs -a

(confirm that lsi_msgpt3 is the kernel driver)

vmkload_mod -s lsi_msgpt3 |grep Version

(check that the driver version is greater than 12)

esxcli system module parameters list -m lsi_msgpt3

  (check that issue_scsi_cmd_to_bringup_drive is not set / n.b. default=1)

esxcli system module parameters set -p issue_scsi_cmd_to_bringup_drive=0 -m lsi_msgpt3

  (set issue_scsi_cmd_to_bringup_drive = 0)

esxcli system module parameters list -m lsi_msgpt3

  (check that issue_scsi_cmd_to_bringup_drive is now = 0)

reboot

(restart the host, then manually restart workloads)

AGAIN, I cannot emphasise this more strongly, DON'T CHANGE unless you are sure of the diagnosis.

Hope this helps.

NCM 6.0 was released in the last two days and I was hoping this issue would be solved. The release notes still mention this under Known Issues and Nimble support verified that NCM 6.0 does not fix this long standing issue. HPE servers that boot from a USB drive will not work with Nimble Connection Manager (NCM). The fix is scheduled to be a part of NCM 6.1 which is many months off. I may change my boot method from USB based to SD or microSD based

Hmmm, after looking at your command outputs again, I'm not convinced it is the same issue.

The VMware article highlights in redthat the storage shows as 0MB.

Whereas yours shows a value greater than zero.

So maybe not the same thing, although it does seem to be similar in some respects.

I just tried it, unfortunately it gives me the same errors as the standard image.
Have you tried installing in legacy? At least that yields to a different error on my side

VMware ESXi 6.7 on HP Z2 Tower G4 Workstation wont install/boot in UEFI/legacy

I'm relatively new to ESXi. I ordered a new workstation PC and tried to install ESXi 6.7 in UEFI mode on it. The installation won't start in UEFI with the following message.

using simple offset uefi rts mapping policy

It gets stuck after this message.

Right afterwards I tried to install in legacy. The installation finishes successfully however it won't boot afterwards stating that it can't find a disc to boot from.

The PC is on the latest BIOS version.

The following hardware is used:

  • Intel Xeon E-2176G 6C CPU
  • (4x16GB) DDR4 2666 DIMM ECC
  • NVIDIA Quadro P400 2GB (3)mDP GFX
  • 2x Intel I210-T1 Ethernet Server Adapter

Many thanks in advance!

Update: Using the HPE custom image results in the exact same behaviour

Hi Continuum,

Thanks for your help, I will try to answer everything one by one.

[peter@IS-77752:~] cd /vmfs/volumes/datastore1

[peter@IS-77752:/vmfs/volumes/5c8a7789-1a4c3a5c-0a47-b083fec42bdd]

And if I run "ls -l" then it shows all the folders with the VMs.

> When can you schedule a reboot of the ESXi ?

I am going to reboot it today, but I am not sure if it would solve it. I will let you know.

> I would also try to backup all running VMs - if that is possible.

I am thinking about, as a work around, if it is possible, to create a new data store and move the VMs to the new one.

Remove them and add them again from the new datastore. I am not 100% sure how to do it or if it is even possible though...

> Also create a VMFS header-dump. That will help to recover in case the VMFS datastore is too damaged to mount again after a reboot.

I have tried, but there is not enough space there even if I use gzip.

And I do not have any other datastore to use...

See attached.

Thanks.

UPDATE:
So I was thinking and realised after we have updated the to 6.7 we had the datastore for a while and it disappeared after a few days.

And now we have noticed something really strange...

If we log in to ESXi with a different user, not the default root user, then we can see the datastore and everything seems to be working fine.

It seems like the issue is with the root user and not with the datastore itself.

Do you know about an issue like this?

Same firm, just the country changes

is it compliant ? i saw in the VMware EULA license should be bought and used in the same country...

is there any exception ?

Thanks

Hi mephivio,

You can apply to VMware licensing to have it transferred. This is up to the sole discretion of VMware whether it’s granted or not.

Kind regards.

No, on the face of it, I get the same error in both modes. I assume there are some drivers missing, but I don't yet know how to tell which ones.

Windows Server 2016 VM hosted by VMWare Workstation 11.x

$

A co-worker of mine is running Workstation 11, and needs to set up a VM with Windows Server 2016. When he ran through the normal process of creating the VM and installing the OS, the installer failed out with an error. The VM would then reboot, encounter the same error, reboot, ad infinitum. (I know I should have the details on the error to help diagnose, but at the moment I don't. But please continue reading, there's more...)

From there we've done the following troubleshooting and attempted workarounds, but to no avail:

  1. I checked the MSDN ISO we're using and confirmed it's intact and complete (SHA1 matches).
  2. I used the ISO to install Win2016 to a new VM on my Worktation instance, no problem. The install completed and the VM boots up fine. I have Workstation 14.x, while he has (as noted) version 11.x.
  3. I created a second new VM, using the compatibility option for Workstation 11.x. I then installed Win2016 to this VM; no problem. The install completed and the VM boots up fine.
  4. My coworker full-cloned a new VM from a snapshot I created on the VM from Step 3. He tried booting up the VM on his (11.x) Workstation instance, but the VM bluescreened while booting.
  5. He then tried just copying the entire Step-3 VM folder to his local machine and booting it up on 11.x. Same problem; the VM bluescreens.

Nothing like this has ever happened before in our usage of Workstation. We've had no difficulty cloning & copying VMs which used other (earlier) versions of the Windows OS.

The obvious diagnosis is that there's some basic incompatibility such that Win2016 won't install or boot properly on Workstation 11.x, and we're pursuing an upgrade for him to work that angle.

But in the meantime, has anyone else experienced these issues with a Win2016 VM -- and if so found a workaround to get the VM to work?

Hi all,

I need to make more free space on bootbank.
