Re: Failed to expand VMFS datastore... - Cannot change the host configuration

Welcome to the Community,

In case that the datastore resides on the same volume as the ESXi installation, then the only way to increase the datastore is to do this from the command line. The Embedded Host Client unfortunately lets you go through the expand storage wizard in such a case, which is clearly a bug.

Increasing the datastore from the command line - as explained in the KB Article that has been posted before - will work, if you follow the steps in the exact order.

Note: In step 7, use the "partedUtil getUsableSectors ..." command to determine the last usable sector.

If you are unsure, or have questions, please ask before you try anything!

If you already did something on the production system, please explain exactly what you did so far.

Which Windows 10 version are you using?

Hello Alex

Yes we have tried several bios versions and firmware versions but still we have problems.

Hey André

Thank you for your additional info, I'll take this into account and discuss it with the external IT firm which has to finish their task.

So far I have only fixed the GPT table, after going via SSH and checking everything it gave me the following message:

"

  1. The backup GPT table is not at the end of the disk, as it should be. This might mean that another operating system believes the disk is smaller.

"

That fix worked perfectly. But as you say, it does appear to be a bug that you can expand the datastore via the Vcenter GUI.

The Windows 10 64 bit 1709 build 16299.431

This image running well on out other cluster with Dell R730 servers and ESXi 6.0 so we dont think it has something to do with the golden image.

Flash durability test fails in a strange way

I am trying to run the flash certification test

The ESXi server is installed on one of our XEON D CPU boards which has an SD Card interface that uses an SD to USB device so the flash appears as a USB device

The Configration, TLS Check, and flash basic tests pass but the flash durability fails after around 30 seconds with

HPE Custom disk for gen9plus disappeared from the website and the only version is available is for pre gen 9

Hi All,

Last week i downloaded ESXi 6.5 U2 from VMware website and the full name of the file was:

VMware-ESXi-6.5.0-Update2-8294253-HPE-Gen9plus-650.U2.10.2.0.14-May2018-depot.zip

Now i can't find this file and the only file that is available for download is:

VMware-ESXi-6.5.0-Update2-8294253-HPE-preGen9-650.U2.9.6.7.1-May2018-depot.zip

The update date is 29.5.2018... yesterday

I am using this link to download the file:

Download VMware vSphere

So i have both files, but i am afraid to upgrade my hosts, the main reason is that my servers are GEN9 and the latest version name is for  pre gen9.

Please help.

I can confirm for version 6.5.

For version 6.7, there is an ISO for Gen9Plus ...

I'd suggest posting it to the ESX of vsphere forum instead of Appvolumes.

Thanks for the reply.

I had read and followed that KB but somehow the space was not being released back to the OS.

This is on an HP supplied image of ESXi. I had found references on the web to the QLogic driver and the ql_ima.log file but that was on an HP ESXi v5 not v6.5 that I have.

Anyway, overnight I rebooted the box and I'm now seeing 99% free in the /tmp folder.

I think the answer to this type of problem, however difficult it might be to get the downtime, is to reboot.

If you are willing to share details about the current disk/partition layout, I will provide you with the commands that are supposed to do the job.

What I need is the output of the following commands:

vmkfstools -P "/vmfs/volumes/DatastoreName"

partedUtil getptbl "/vmfs/devices/disks/DeviceName"

partedUtil getUsableSectors "/vmfs/devices/disks/DeviceName"

If you want, you can provide this information for both, the production system as well as for the test system, so that you can try this ion the test system prior to do it in production.

In any case, make sure - unless you already did - that you have a backup of the VMs, just in case that something unexpected happens.

Looking at vSphere Essentials for a small company needing a virtual, but have questions and VMWare sales isn't calling back.

Basically, I really need to know if I am choosing the right product.

I have a customer that want's to virtualize one server, with perhaps adding a second server (both linux) within the year.

I don't need huge performance or uptime requirements, but do need to be able to back up consistently and often.  I am looking at Altaro for that (we use it for Hyper-Vs right now) and that's fine, but not sure how it interfaces with vSphere - does it need a separate machine?  Realize that's more of a question for Altaro.

My biggest concern is if I'm buying the right VMWare product for this customer.  Essentials looks perfect, but I don't see a way to download or test this, and see no trial version that I can run without buying a key, even for a few days.  That would be ideal for me, just being able to get hands-on with the full product and try it out.

I've contacted Sales four times, leaving messages that never get returned.  I've tweeted at them.  No response.  Is that normal?

From what you describe, I agree with you that vSphere Essentials is likely the way to go. This edition will provide access to the API that most commercial backup applications require. You can download 60-day evaluations for almost all VMware products from Evaluate VMware Products. In your case it's the "VMware vSphere" evaluation that you want to select. During the evaluation period, you'll be able to use all features, including those which will not be available in the Essentials Edition. However, with the requirements you posted, you will likely not use such features anyway. Also note that the binaries for all editions are the same, and only the license key makes the difference, i.e. locks/unlocks features, so once you decide to purchase the product, all you need to do is to apply the license key (no reinstallation required).

Although the Essentials Edition includes a license for an instance of vCenter Server, you may not even need to bother with this, but only use ESXi to host the VMs.

Re: folder with nvram file in it

Also beware that if your VM is encrypted, the nvram will hold the private key for the encryption so if you delete it for a encrypted vm, all you now have for that VM is bit salad.

edit: here's the article with details about it, I got it almost correct, it's usage of a vTPM within the VM: vSphere 6.7 - Virtual Trusted Platform Modules - VMware vSphere Blog

The vmx file holds the vm level encryption key

Re: The initiator could not establish a network connection to the target

I know this thread has been created a long time ago but still there are some people have this issue.

That can be due to iSCSI login timeout.

I had the same issue and managed to resolve it by tuning the iSCSI login timeout from 5 sec (Default) to 30 seconds and also changing NOOP Intervals and NOOP timeout values to 30 seconds.

But as long as the both VMKs are active and there is no dead paths to the iSCSI targets and also all paths are visible, assuming that you have already checked the network IP addresses, subnet mask and MTU size, the alert can be ignored.

Re: The ramdisk 'tmp' is full.

That's a known issue with qLogic driver that creates a massive log fiel and fills up the /tmp folder.

To resolve the issue, upgrade the QLogic driver on the ESXi host.

The workaround is to delete the ql_ima.log file and then you will need to restart management services on the ESXi host to release the space in /tmp folder.

To restart the management services, SSH to the host and run "service.sh restart"

** Restarting management services won't impact running VMs on that host.

To check the disk space, SSH to the host and run "vdf -h"

Also if you cannot upgrade the qLogic driver due to hardware compatibility etc. you can create a cron job to delete the ql_ima.log file every day which will prevent /tmp folder from filling up.

Re: Unable to use VM after datastore got full

Revert the changes back and then storage migrate the VM to a different datastore if possible.

Buf before moving it, after reverting the changes back, check the lock on the VMDK file again and make sure it's not locked.

If it doesn't resolve the issue, the workaround would be:

-Removing the VM from inventory and re-adding it back

-Removing the ESXi host from inventory and re-adding it back

-Removing flag from vCenter Server Inventory DB manually
