Diagnosing PDL [ESXi 6.x]
While studying for my VCP6-DCA I came across the following sample question:
----- start question -----
An administrator runs the command esxcli storage core device list and sees the following output:
mpx.vmhba1:C0:T0:L0 Display Name: RAID 5 (mpx.vmhba1:C0:T0:L0) Has Settable Display Name: false SizE. 40960 Device Type: Direct-Access Multipath Plugin: NMP Devfs Path: /vmfs/devices/disks/mpx.vmhba1:C0:T0:L0 Status: off Is Local: true
What can be determined by this output?
A. The device is a being used for vFlash Read Cache.
B. The device is in a Permanent Device Loss (PDL) state.
C. The device is a local Solid State Device (SSD).
D. The device is in an All Paths Down (APD) state.
Answer: B. The device is in a Permanent Device Loss (PDL) state.
----- end question -----
The only clue I see about the state of the device is "Status: off". The explanation for this answer includes a reference to https://kb.vmware.com/kb/2004684 which is about PDL but does not include a reference to "Status: off", and I found https://kb.vmware.com/kb/2004605 which does include a reference to "Status: off" but does not explicitly refer to PDL
https://kb.vmware.com/kb/2004684
1) Is this device in a state of PDL?
2) If yes, is "Status: off" sufficient to make this diagnosis?
3) ... and can local (Is Local: true) and/or direct (Device Type: Direct-Access) devices be in as state of PDL? I realize that this sounds like a dumb question but the KBs seem to be really focused on array devices.
4) Even though KB 2004605 does not explicitly state that the devices are in a state of PDL can this be (safely) assumed?
Thanks.

Yes

Yes

Yes. Any device is capable of showing an off status.
4) Even though KB 2004605 does not explicitly state that the devices are in a state of PDL can this be (safely) assumed?
Essentially, yes.
Re: PSOD on HP DL380 G7
Yes, I also made sure to update the firmware.
Re: PSOD on HP DL380 G7
Are you patched up to the latest build?
Re: deplow vm
i know but I am investigating what kinds of problems this misjudgment may have. I could not find any documents.
Re: deplow vm
You'll need to provide more information if you want details. As I said, choosing the wrong OS during the wizard can create the VM with virtual hardware that is either inappropriate or suboptimal for that OS. So in the case of a vNIC, this can mean higher guest OS utilization and lower overall throughput and performance. In the case of a storage controller, it can mean the same thing and other conditions.
Console Output via Serial port read by a Virtual Machine
Can we have the following setup in ESXi:
Cisco Switch Console Port ----------ESXi Server Serial port------VM Machine using physical serial port
I have used Physical Serial port option in ESXi server for virtual machine but to no avail...Putty connects but no output
Re: Repair / Recover VMFS Volume
I have a similar problem with ESXI 5. Caused by several things.
It started with failure of the UPS which caused a HDD failure of a RAID1 configuration and it damaged my external attached backup device.
Before I received a spare HDD to rebuild the RAID1 The Ups failed again and corrupted somehow the last good working HDD. Which resulted that the ESXI5 doesn't see VMFS store anymore.
Is there any change to retrieve the VM's which where stored on the missing VMFS volume?
Re: The Small Footprint CIM Broker Daemon (SFCBD) is running, but no data has been reported. You may need to install a CIM provider for your storage adapter.
Additional Information:
Dell PowerEdge R630 is at latest Firmware Level (Life Cycle Manager via Dell), Perc H730 Mini FW is Version 25.5.3.0005, LSI Driver is Version 7.700.50.00, Disks (Seagate ST1200MM0088) are at Rev. TT31.
Storage Monitoring via "Open Manage Server Administrator 9.1" (installed on a VM with Windows Server 2016) is working however.
Looks like a problem with VMware ESXi Web GUI.
Has someone got Storage Monitoring working with just the Esxi Web Gui?
No Coredump target has been configured
Hi there,
My Host had ungrace shutdown over power failure,
I had to reconfigure the Raid disks and to add the Host disks again as a data store to the host.
Since that, I get the message "No coredump target has been configured. Host core dumps cannot be saved"
I see from device the disk that used to be for the coredump but I can't seem to applay this again on it.
Please help here, how to reconnect it?
Thanks,
Barakk.
Re: No Coredump target has been configured
You should use esxcli to set a new coredump target on a local disk.
Delta and flat vmdk
Hi,
I have this file from a broken 6.0 esxi machine (also hardware failure):
xxx.vmdk
xxx-0000001.vmdk
xxx-0000001-delta.vmdk
xxx-flat.vmdk
I have to try to recover some data while I'm waiting for the new hardware. There is a way to merge that file and try a data recovery?
It was an added virtual disk without os installed of 250 gb.
I can mount the flat vmdk on my linux machine but i cannot mount the delta.vmdk
Thank you
Re: Delta and flat vmdk
The delta file contains changed data blocks with references to the location in the flat file. You can merge the files by creating a clone using either the vmkfstools command on an ESXi host, or the vmware-vdiskmanager command line utility which comes with hosted products like VMware Workstation.
In either case you'll use "xxx-0000001.vmdk" as the source file, and s.th. like "clone.vmdk" as the target.

Re: No Coredump target has been configured
Hi,
There is no option to reconnect it to what was before?
Thanks,
Barakk.
Re: No Coredump target has been configured
Yes, using esxcli.
Re: Disabling SSLV2 and SSLV3 for ESXI 4.0, 4.1, 5.1 and 5.5
Hi,
I saw your reply. I am facing same issue.
I have a request to enable TLS 1.2 on my ESXi 5.0 & Vcenter server 5.0.
How to do that in a safe way. Please guide.
Thanks
Jitendra
Re: I Could one path to LUN
The issue has been resolved by reseting the HBA , not LUN has 4 active paths.
esxcli storage san fc reset -A vmhba1
Thank you All for you suggestions.
Re: PSOD on HP DL380 G7
From the screenshot, the catch point is Recursive panic on same cpu message on PCPU5 and I suspect hardware issues with the Physical CPU 5. check the hardware diagnostics on the ESXi host. Please see the below Kb explains about the recursive panic for same cpu.
Thanks,

ESX 6.0 virtual machine creation may fail because agent is unable to retrieve VM creation options from the host
Hello Everyone, i am getting the error "virtual machine creation may fail because agent is unable to retrieve VM creation options from the host" while trying to perform the following actions on vSphere client connected to 3 Hosts ESX 6.0 Cluster, 1) Enable FT for a VM 2) Migrate the VM using vMotion. Ran the site survey and it points to storage and disk errors. Any help or pointers would be much appreciated. Thanks.
