This is what i see in the vmware-1.log

2017-10-03T21:31:02.973Z| vcpu-0| I120: PIIX4: PM Soft Off.  Good-bye.

2017-10-03T21:31:02.973Z| vcpu-0| I120: Chipset: Issuing power-off request...

2017-10-03T21:31:02.973Z| vcpu-0| A115: ConfigDB: Setting softPowerOff = "TRUE"

2017-10-03T21:31:02.981Z| vmx| I120: Stopping VCPU threads...

According to vmware kb article  https://kb.vmware.com/kb/1019064   Determining why a virtual machine was powered off or restarted.

It means :

A Guest OS initiated halt generates this event within the virtual machine logs:

Mar 04 17:28:58.849: vcpu-0| PIIX4: PM Soft Off. Good-bye.

To continue troubleshooting, contact the operating system vendor to determine why the guest operating system initiated the halt. If the operating system vendor suspects that the outage was caused by VMware Tools or the virtual hardware, contact VMware support. If you determine that the operating system within your virtual machine reported a blue screen, kernel panic, or equivalent, see https://kb.vmware.com/kb/1003999

Do you also see something like vmx-zdump file in the virtual machine working directory ? If yes please upload that too.

No dump files, no - only the two log files, and the usual disk, memory, and lock files.

Soft Off - this sounds like someone issued a Shut-Down / restart command?  Is this possible?

(We just inherited this client from someone else who left things in a ... poor state.  It's possible users have the ability to reboot the server while RDP'ed into it.  I'll check to see if they do.)

VMkernel log & SCSI Sense Codes

Hi,

Should be there errors and scsi sense codes if your VM data gets corrupted, or is it possible that content of the block itself is corrupted (e.g. bitflip) in such way that on scsi level looks OK, but the data itself is not valid ?

It is happening from time to time that random VM just dies or starts reporting various FS errors, like would you have bad hdd on physical server. This happens only with VMs on FC array while those on iscsi one don't have a problem. Array and san fabric is supposedly OK, so I am looking on server and vmware side if there is anything that would indicate what is going on.

best regards

I think you mentioned BSOD as the reason for reboot.  You should check system event logs for more details and load the memory dump in WinDbg and share the Screenshot of that here.

So i check the log file again and found another entry

2017-10-03T21:30:49.147Z| vmx| I120: Tools: sending 'OS_Halt' (state = 1) state change request

2017-10-03T21:30:49.147Z| vmx| I120: Vix: [3006474 vmxCommands.c:534]: VMAutomation_InitiatePowerOff. Tried to soft halt. Success = 1

as per the vmware kb#1019064 this means A user or API initiated request to shutdown a virtual machine.

By "client," do you mean to run that command in the ESXi shell?  If not, where exactly?  I'm new to ESXi. Been using Workstation for years with no problem.

By "client" I mean run that command in an ESXi shell to update the HTML5 host client as the latest version may fix bugs which are the cause of your issue.

Have you installed VMware tools on these systems? This is a necessary first step.

What you're describing sounds like there are either bits being dropped in transmission due to receiver issues, or data corruption. Your warning that the "san fabric is supposedly OK" is not very reassuring, so you may want to look at drops on the transceiver side. Usually data corruption over FC doesn't issue SCSI sense codes, because those would have to be sourced from the array side, and the array, since it's block, has no knowledge of what constitutes those data, only that it's data. Also check firmware on your director and the array itself as sometimes bugs can lead to similar symptoms.

Happens to me with a dell t710 server too

There is a way to reboot the server if is a hard crash like that???

Thnks

What hardware or server model are you running with ESXi? And by the way, the T710 is not supported to run ESXi 6.5.

Re: Network Pause Frames

Hi mate, sorry couldnt response in time. We verified firmware compatibility and found BIOS firmware is quite advance compared to ESXi. We have upgraded NIC firmware/driver post which we are not observing any pause frames. Seems issue is due to incompatible firmware only as you rightly pointed out.

Thank you for your support.

What is the build number of ESXI and version of ESXI embedded host client ?

If bits are being dropped this should be detected/logged on server as CRC errors ?

Problem is that array is managed by others and the say that it is OK and that's it. I'm looking on server side to either found error on our end or something to prove them that array is not OK after all.

Any Ideas?

Do I need to reload some services in order to apply changes?

Is there any other reason why this verbose messages are still logged?

Thanks

Ale
