Re: Migration to new datastore (rebuilding the old one)

Welcome to the Community,

the steps are basically ok, although I'd recommend against RAID0, except that this is a test/lab environment.

Doesn't ESXi require any disk to be able to boot?

ESXi requires its boot device, i.e. it depends on whether ESXi is installed on the RAID0 array, or on a separate device (e.g. an USB/SD device).

for those who may have the same problem and read this post: problem has been fixed by updating the firmware of the HBA card

Re: ESXi 6.7 Performance graphs only show the last few minutes

Hi I, don’t know if it is relevant or not. I didn’t think it was initially. In addition to my original post. Besides moving the scratch location (to a local SSD). I also configured all the settings under Swap, to Yes, and an SSD datastore (I needed to set them in order to successfully do manual updates). And I changed Time & date settings to manual and disabled NTP service. After all the changes performance history seems to be saved for the entire last hour. I tested to enable NTP today again and medially the performance data was erased for me. I could not see that my host current time was noticeable changed by the NTP service. So it was very close to correct already.

If any of the settings is relevant to the problem I feel it is a bug. For example small time corrections by NTP should not cause such problems.

I’m on a standalone, white box, host running ESXI 6.7 U2 B13644139. I also have a LAB host, IBM server, at work with the same problem but I have not had time to try to fix the performance logs on that yet.

I hope it helps.

Re: VMFS Datastore won't mount

Hi continuum,

I've found out why datastore was mounted without errors only several hours later.

Unfoutanrly, too many people involved in storage recovery. And one of my teammates manually added corrupted datastore to newly installed ESXi server. I assume this was done via VMware Client by rebuilding datastore's header.

I can't describe my feeling at that moment. And need several hours to calm down.

Whether it worth to continue DIY restoring?

I've made new 1.5Gb dump and found metadata of lost VM's in it.

Datastore is 6Tb size, so it's hard to make a backup dump of it.

Thanks

Booted from UFSexplorer LiveCD and start datastore search.

Found most of VM's files.

Via UFSexplorer mount vmdk disk but only partial data is visible and available for recovery.

Some folders I'm looking for are 0-sized files, others are not visible at all.

Hello Sureshkumar,

> I dont think this is an issue with your SD card, you may try to take a current config backup and reinstall the host and restore the config backup.

Unfortunately, I've never done a reinstall of an ESXi.

OK, I got a config backup, but I won't need it, because theres is only IP-Configuration which has to be changed.

When I perform the reinstall, is there any danger of wiping out my datastore?

I think, the most important thing is that I have to use the option:

====================================

.....

(X) Install ESXi, preserving VMFS Datastore

.....

====================================

I've got a backup of all important VMs on our Synology NAS.

I'll use this installation image for my "ProLiant ML350p Gen8":

VMware-ESXi-6.0.0-Update3-9313334-HPE-preGen9-600.9.8.5.4-Sep2018.iso

Is there anything more I have to consider?

best regards from germany

Siegfried

Yes - that is one of two human mistakes I see quite often.

The other one is people trying to deny they accidentaly made a mistake and then invent some stories to cover up their mistake.

In this case I try to extract them anyway and hope that checkdisk can fix some of the errors.

In worst case I ask for a list of very important files and then use scalpel or photorec to search for those files.

It may help to reinject the VMFS header dump you created for me some days ago.

Not sure if this helps here as I dont have the full story - but it helped in one similar case I had some months ago.

"Unable to install VMware Tools." error on ESXi 6.7U2 running on Mac Pro (MacPro6,1)

We set up a Mac Pro 2013 (MacPro6,1) as an ESXi host 6.7U2.

We confirmed the model and Boot ROM are compatible with the above.

We built the virtual machine (macOS Mojave 10.14.5) in VMware Fusion Pro 11.1.0 and uploaded to the ESXi host.

Tools were updated within VMware Fusion Pro 11.1.0 before uploading through the app to the ESXi host.

The virtual machine works beautifully, however ESXi complains the VMware Tools on the virtual machine need to be updated.

When I bring up the virtual machine an log in (since VMware Tools can't be installed on macOS without someone logged in), nothing happens.

If I try to update VMware Tools on the virtual machine using VMware Fusion Pro 11.1.0, I get this error, seems like something is missing on the ESXi host:

Project123_ 2019-06-03 at 1.30.44 PM.png

Project123_ 2019-06-03 at 1.33.37 PM.png

How can this be fixed so ESXi stops complaining about VMware Tools being out of date?

Thanks,
Don

I don't see any information about vSphere 6.0 update 3 or any other build versions of 6.0.  Can anyone chime in if this Build 1809 problem is happening on 6.0u3 and/or specific builds of 6.0u3?

We're prepping our upgrade from Build 1709 to 1809 in our VDI environment, but this would be a game breaker for a few of our linked clone pools if snapshots take 2x longer to boot.

Has anyone tried 1903 to see if it's the same issue?

The problem happens with VMFS 6 and that's only supported as of vsphere 6.5. If you're still on vsphere 6.0 then you're running VMFS5 so you should be ok....

Figured it out. Logged into My VMware and downloaded the ZIP containing VMware Tools.

Unzip'd, scp'd the darwin.* files to our ESXi box, to the below folder.

Boom.

Done.

Slow Network for VM2 but fast for VM1

$

Hi:

I have a server running ESXi 5.5 with (2) VMs:

VM1: Virtual Machine Version 8, Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard, E1000E network adapter

VM2: Virtual Machine Version 10 vmx-10, Windows Small Business Server 2011 Stadard, E1000 network adapter

Both VMs are on the same VMNetwork and both are showing network adapters connected at 1Gbps.

If I run an Internet speed test from VM1, it comes back around 500 Mbps (customer has fast fiber Internet connection)

If I run an Internet speed test from VM2, it comes back at only 15 Mbps

Any ideas as to why VM2 connects to Internet so much slower?

Thank you!

Bob H.

I am having this experience in on  Datastore, very shortly (an hour) after increasing tow others successfully.
There is no evident difference in the LUN IDs between the two systems.
